Unique venues for your wedding
South west Scotland offers a variety of unique venues in which to celebrate your wedding, from historic castles to elegant stately homes and luxurious hotels. Listed below is just a small selection of the exclusive wedding locations available to you through SW Scotland Events.
Near Kirkcudbright
This beautiful self catering castle is set in large mature gardens and woodlands on the south west coast of Scotland, and comes complete with log fires and a games room. There is a large sandy beach within a 15 minute walk. With this establishment being self catering, the hire of tables, chairs, crockery and cutlery etc. will be necessary for functions of over 14 people.
The great hall is large and can seat up to 40 people. To the front of the castle is a grassed area surrounded by trees that could accommodate a hired marquee, giving seating for up to 100 people. The accommodation in the castle comprises four double rooms and three twin rooms, which can all be found on the first and second floor levels. Two of the double rooms share bathrooms with two of the twin rooms. The other bedrooms have en suite facilities.
Next to the castle is a self catering cottage with one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, with a shared bathroom. This will allow accommodation for another 4 people.
The castle is very popular for wedding parties who hire the castle for a week, and enjoy some of the local activities including golf, fishing, walking, go karting, paintballing, pony trekking etc. Children and well behaved dogs are welcome. This castle is licensed to hold wedding ceremonies inside or in the gardens.
Sulwath Brewery
If you are looking for somewhere a little different to have your wedding, why not have it in a working, family run brewery? Here in Dumfries and Galloway we have the perfect place - the Sulwath Brewery. It has its own bar and seating area, along with a private garden area with tables and chairs. The bar and garden can accommodate up to 60 people, and a buffet can also be provided.
The company was first established in 1995 with the remit to brew traditional beers, using local produce where possible, to provide natural real ales unique to the region. The renowned softness of the water produces beers that have a rounded and mellow flavour, without the harshness that harder water tends to create.
The brewery does not hold a license for registrar wedding ceremonies, but one can be obtained for £425 from the licensing office in Annan.
Stranraer
This magnificent castle was built in 1820 for Sir John Ross, the Arctic explorer who joined the Navy in 1786, where he rose to the rank of Captain. The castle opened its doors to guests in 1962. This hotel is one of seven now owned by the McMillan family. As with all of their hotels, extensive refurbishment and restoration has made each one an experience of bygone days, with exceptional comfort.
The dining/function room is fully air conditioned and can seat up to 180 people for a sit down meal or buffet, with an adjoining bar and further seating area. The hotel has 73 en-suite bedrooms all equipped to a very high standard. There is also an indoor heated swimming pool with spa bath, saunas, sun beds and a multi-gym. There is a large games room, which all residents are welcome to use.
The hotel holds a current marriage license for ceremonies either inside or in the gardens.

Near Gatehouse-of-Fleet
This beautifully spacious hotel is another one owned by the McMillan family since 1981. Set within grounds of over 150 acres, this beautiful building dates back to 1763, when James Murray chose the superb setting overlooking the Galloway hills to build his country mansion. Sympathetic renovations and extensive refurbishment, under the personal supervision of the McMillan family, have restored this exquisite building to its former glory.
This hotel has 55 very comfortable en-suite bedrooms, all with modern conveniences including satellite television. All rooms are spacious with views over the lake to the front, or the gardens and woodlands to the back. Some of the rooms in the forest wing have balconies and are particularly suited to families. The dining room can cater for up to 120 people for a sit down or buffet meal.
In 1994 the hotel opened its own 18 hole parkland golf course, which was designed by the well known golf architect, Tom Macauley. This hotel can cater for weddings in the last two weeks of November, the beginning of December and the first two weeks of February, making this the perfect winter wedding location.
The hotel holds a current license for wedding ceremonies inside or in the gardens.
Near Crocketford
This elegant country house is set within a working farm, which has 25,000 acres of farmland, moorland and woodland. The house enjoys, from its elevated position, outstanding views over rolling countryside to the Solway coast in the distance, and has a tree lined driveway leading up to the house.
The wood paneled dining room can seat 36 for a sit down meal, but up to 160 can be catered for in their own marquee in the courtyard, adjacent to the dining room through glass paneled doors. To the side of the courtyard is an illuminated fountain containing goldfish.
Set around the courtyard are 10 double / twin en-suite bedrooms which are all themed, beautifully finished and very comfortable. Anyone wishing to book this establishment and requiring a marquee will need too book all of their ten bedrooms. This establishment is happy to accommodate bride and groom only ceremonies, where there are no more than 4 guests and no evening entertainment.

Near Dalbeattie
This beautiful privately owned Scottish baronial manor house with sweeping Jacobean style oak wooden staircase, wooden paneled walls, and stained glass windows and turrets was built by William Douglas Robinson in the 1880's on the site of a smaller mansion, dating back to 1761.
The present owners are happy to hire out parts of the house and gardens to wedding parties to celebrate their special day. There are 7 spacious bedrooms which the bridal party can use on a bed & breakfast basis. The great hall / dining room can accommodate 130 people for a buffet style meal or up to 50 for a more formal meal.
The manor is reached by a long tree lined country drive; the gardens cover 5 acres which also include a pond, paddock and courtyard which makes a perfect backdrop for photos.
The manor enjoys views of the Solway Firth and Heston Island, and over the Solway Estuary in the distance is England.
The property is not licensed for weddings as yet, but a temporary license can be obtained through the licensing board based in Annan at a price of £445.

Near Kirkcudbright

Gretna
This well established hotel has been family run since 1990 and is a turn of the century grade 2 listed building with beautiful colourful borders and shady trees.
Over the last few years the hotel has undergone major refurbishment giving a new spacious warm naturally lit look to their rooms.
This hotel has 30 very comfortable bedrooms with full en-suite facilities.
It has three function rooms - the function room you are allocated will depend on the numbers attending your wedding.
The hotel is not licensed to hold wedding ceremonies.
Kirkcolm
This working lighthouse was built in 1815 by Robert Stevenson and is a grade A listed building. During the hours of dusk to dawn you are able to view the bewitching five fingers of the light from the tower which beams its own individual signature to all passing vessels.
The hotel is set in 20 acres of meadows leading down towards the rocky headlands, encompassing the hotel and providing stunning panoramic sea views, taking in Ayrshire coast, Ailsa Craig, Arran, Mull of Kintyre and of course Northern Ireland.
The lighthouse hotel has 9 luxury bedrooms/suites all with their own private facilities and individual character.
The dining room can accommodate up to 28 people for a sit down meal so is ideal for the smaller function.
The wedding ceremony has become very popular with couples choosing to be married standing on the rocks with the backdrop of Ailsa Craig, Arran and the Mull of Kintyre.

Portpatrick
This lodge is encircled by dramatic cliffs, lush woodlands, glorious gardens and its own private sandy cove which over looks the sea to Ireland, also in the garden is its own tree house for the younger explorers.
The lodge has 9 luxuriously spacious en-suite bedrooms.
The dining rooms can accommodate small functions up to 40 people for a sit down meal.
The large grass area to the front of the lodge can accommodate a Marquee for up to 200 people.
The lodge is licensed for weddings inside and in the gardens or there private beach area over looking the sea.

Near Stranraer
This country house hotel has beautiful views across their gardens and surrounding countryside. The hotel has 8 delightful en-suite bedrooms all with the comfort of home, some of the bedrooms also have a sea view across Luce Bay.
The conservatory dining area which can accommodate up to 60 for a sit down meal or 120 for a buffet has views across the countryside.
To the front of the hotel is a grassed area that can accommodate a Marquee for the larger party of up to 400 people which is ideal for the summer wedding.

Auldgirth
This spectacular 19th century castle type country house is situated in 45 acres of woodlands extending down to the River Nith that flows through the grounds.
With magnificent panelled entrance hall and elegant staircase it makes a perfect back drop for photos.
This beautiful castle was remodelled in 1873 and established as a hotel in 1938, thankfully keeping a lot of the original features of the bygone days.

Lockerbie
This beautiful country house hotel is set amid five acres of scenic elevated parkland and approached through an avenue of beech trees.
The hotel is steeped in history which the present new owners are happy to share with you.
The hotel dates back to 1762, but with all the up-to-the-minute amenities with which you would find in a top class hotel.
The bedrooms have all the comfort of home with en-suite facilities. There are also ground level bedrooms.

This very large country house hotel is situated within 78 acres of beautiful green fields, secluded woodlands and private gardens, the long driveway to the property is lined with different trees and shrubs.

The large dining room can cater for 100 people with 2 smaller rooms for a smaller party.

Dumfries
This beautiful Georgian house standing in its own landscaped gardens in the centre of a forest is a family run hotel. Over the past five years it has been extensively restored back to its former glory, with beautiful wood panelling throughout and a half moon shaped tree lined driveway over looked by the hotel on the hill with views across the woods and open countryside, it also has a large grassed area to the side which can accommodate a Marquee for up to 250 if required.
All the bedrooms have been tastefully decorated and have there own en-suite facilities giving you all the comforts of home.

Gretna Green
This spacious hotel has been associated with weddings for over 250 years and was the original marriage house, situated in 10 acres of private grounds which includes landscaped gardens, gazebo and ornamental ponds.
Your wedding can take place in the blacksmith's workshop with its flagstone floor, whitewashed walls and magnificent 19th century nobleman's carriage making a stunning backdrop for photographs, the blacksmiths is within walking distance of the hotel.
This hotel has 100 spacious en-suite bedrooms and a function room that can cater for large numbers.
Near Dumfries
This magnificent country house hotel is set in 18 acres of private parkland with beautiful views over the Solway Firth towards the Lake District.
The hotel has 32 tastefully decorated en-suite bedrooms all with there own private facilities and views over the local countryside.

Castle Douglas

The function room can cater for 130 for a sit down meal and 200 for the evening reception.

Gretna
This beautiful spacious garden house hotel is set in large gardens with two separate outside areas for your wedding, by the waterfall or in the Japanese water garden - or if the weather lets you down you can have your wedding service in the Tokido suite with lighted candles.
All of the hotels 38 bedrooms are fully en-suite and individually furnished to a high standed for comfort.
The very large dining and function area can cater for large weddings as well as the small intimate occasion.

Gretna
Anvil Hall is a beautiful stone hall which has been celebrating many wedding ceremonies for many years, thousands of couples have become part of the Gretna Green legend. The hall can seat up to 100 people in its long stately room.
The gardens have lots of photo opportunities from the kissing gate, gazebo as well as the famous Gretna Green sign.
The hall can only provide somewhere to have your ceremony and cannot do receptions or evening entertainment.
